Our First Maths Project – American High School Maths Challenge Now Open to UK Students

Who Wants to Be a Mathematician logo“Who Wants to be a Mathematician” is a national high school competition held annually in America, involving more than two thousand students. Back in January Good Thinking’s Simon Singh was lucky enough to attend the final in Seattle.

This year, Good Thinking, Matt Parker and Maths Fest have been working closely with Mike Breen and the American Mathematical Society to enable UK students to play along in a parallel competition, with the chance of winning prizes for themselves and their schools. We received a fantastic response to our last minute invitation to schools, with roughly 150 schools taking part and 71 students (from 42 schools) jumping the very bar and reaching the second stage, which started this week.

You can find out more about the competition here, and follow us on twitter to find out who gets to the final, which will be held at Maths Fest in February, 2017.

Also, follows us for news of next year’s competition. If all goes to plan, we will run the competition again and the UK winner will get a chance to compete in the final in America.
