An exceptional opportunity for a multi-talented maths enthusiast with huge talents both inside and outside the classroom.
Three years ago, Simon Singh (author of bestselling books such as “Fermat’s Last Theorem”) created the Top-Top Set Maths Project, designed to develop maths excellence among students in non-selective state secondary schools, enabling a broader range of students to build their futures on mathematics.
The project is currently running in 13 schools, with strong signs of having a significant impact. For example, Year 9 top-top sets (who have been involved in the project for three years) outperform Year 11 top sets in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge.
Not surprisingly, the aim is to grow and develop the project over the next five years, so that several hundred more schools run top-top sets, thereby creating thousands of additional skilled young mathematicians from a diverse range of backgrounds, ready and able to pursue maths-based STEM degrees at the best universities.
This is a unique opportunity to help guide the expansion of this exciting and ambitious educational project, working alongside Simon as Top-Top Set Maths Project Co-ordinator.

Who are we seeking?
We are seeking an experienced maths teacher, who has a passion for helping students achieve excellence, and who also has the skills and tenacity needed to develop and lead a pioneering national maths project in conjunction with Simon Singh. The successful candidate will believe strongly in the impact that high quality maths teaching can have on very able students and be passionate about supporting the most able maths students in our state schools to achieve their true potential. The successful candidate will:
- Hold a relevant undergraduate degree.
- Share our vision that there is no ceiling to achievement and believe in the transformational nature of education.
- Have experience of teaching A level Mathematics.
- Have a desire to work with schools to develop a pioneering project that could have a major impact on the number of students achieving maths excellence in the UK.
- Be excited by the prospect of dealing with the challenges that inevitably accompany any new project.
Starting: Autumn 2019.
Salary £33,000 to £40,000 per year (depending on experience) for a full-time post of 160 hours per month.
The successful candidate for Top-Top Set Project Co-ordinator will work from home when not visiting schools. He or she should live within easy access of London, as most of the current top-top set schools are based in London – though, with your help, we are looking to expand the scheme across the UK.
Responsibilities for the Top-Top Set Project Co-ordinator include:
- Developing the top-top set project to maximise its impact and cost-effectiveness.
- Supporting and visiting the schools currently
- Helping schools implement the top-top set model to full effect.
- Recruiting more schools to start in September 2020.
- Working with potential and existing funders.
- Teaching top-top sets or potential top-top set students.
- Developing resources for and managing the online Parallel Project.
The Top-Top Set Mathematics Project is run but Good Thinking, a charity founded by Simon Singh, which promotes science and mathematics.
